Area veterans and representatives from West Virginia University will mark the 73rd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor with a ceremony on Dec. 5 at Oglebay Plaza on the WVU Downtown Campus.

The ceremony, sponsored by the Office of WVU Veterans Affairs, will take place at 10 a.m. and is open to the public. Food and beverages will be served.

Speakers at the event will be Lieutenant Colonel Steven Clark, head of Army ROTC, Robert Burns, associate professor in the Department of Forestry, and Jeremy Allio, president of the Morgantown VFW.

“The Office of WVU Veterans Affairs is proud to sponsor this wonderful event. Remembering Pearl Harbor Day and honoring our military personnel is an important part of our University’s mission.”

Ceremonies marking the anniversary of Pearl Harbor have taken place at Oglebay Plaza since the early 1970s. In 2007, a commemorative bronze plaque with the names of 106 sailors who died during the attack on the USS West Virginia was dedicated. It hangs on the wall surrounding the mast of the Battleship USS West Virginia as a tribute to veterans. The memorial plaza was refurbished in 2011. The West Virginia was one of the ships sunk in the attack on Pearl Harbor, but was raised and returned to service before the end of the war.
