David Stewart, West Virginia University associate vice president for International Student Affairs and Global Services, has been named interim director for the Office of International Programs.
Stewart will fill the position on a part-time basis effective Feb. 1, as the University considers the optimal organizational structure to advance strategic global innovation, which is Goal Four of the 2020 Strategic Plan for the Future. Stewart will replace Michael Lastinger, the associate provost for International Academic Affairs, who retired from the University mid-academic year.
Stewart will direct the study abroad and student exchange programs at WVU and oversee the international grants program. He will continue to work closely with the Office of International Students and Scholars, International Admissions, the Intensive English Program and various academic units across the University.
“I’m very excited to have David in this position to help advance the building of ‘One Global WVU.’ As we strive to make our University more connected to, enabled by and engaged with the world, I am quite sure that David will provide the skills and leadership to make that vision a reality,” said Chief Global Officer Dr. Jose Sartarelli.
Stewart has served in his current position since 2010. The Office of International Student Affairs and Global Services, a unit within the Division of Student Affairs, is tasked with international student recruitment, support and guidance to international students, organization of campus-wide international programs, and the enhancement of global alumni outreach efforts. Stewart’s experience with these international efforts positions him to effectively lead OIP during this transitional period, said Ken Gray, vice president for student affairs.
“Dr. Stewart will do a magnificent job in directing the Office of International Programs. His expertise as a faculty member and former dean of students, and his extensive experience in international student affairs and global services underscore his unique qualifications to serve as the interim director of OIP,” Gray said. “He will provide the necessary leadership, knowledge and international relationships that will enhance the ability of OIP to advance WVU’s global mission.”
Stewart came to WVU in 1991 as an assistant professor of English. In 1999, he was named associate dean of Student Affairs and Residential Education, overseeing the resident faculty leader program, Resident Life, University 101 and the University Learning Centers. He served briefly as dean of students in 2010, before assuming his current role as associate vice president.
