The West Virginia University and local community are invited to a celebration at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, in the lobby of E. Moore Hall to commemorate 50 years of service by the University Police Department.

WVU Police Chief Bob Roberts and Narvel Weese, vice president of administration and finance, will speak. WVU President Jim Clements is also expected to provide brief remarks.

The WVU police began in 1961 as a four-person squad of security officers and has grown to a 53-member unit that includes specialized officers, bicycle patrols, and a student cadet force serving the Evansdale, Downtown and Health Sciences campuses. Officers at Potomac State and WVU Tech also work closely with the Morgantown campus force

“There have been many changes for the WVU Police over the past five decades,” Weese said, “but the dedication and quality of our officers has been a constant over those years. Most of their work goes unnoticed, but the department touches the lives of nearly everyone on campus and their presence is vital to the safety of our students, faculty and staff. We encourage everyone to stop by and say thanks – good job.”
