It’s not the typical kind of donation handled everyday by the West Virginia University Foundation – like cash, stock or land. But the contribution will be just as beneficial in supporting WVU students and programs.

Officials with The Greenbrier Classic Badges for Charity program have donated 1,000 badges, with a face value of $495 each, to the Foundation for this summer’s golf tournament to be held July 25-31 at The Greenbrier Resort’s famed Old White Course. This is the second year for The Greenbrier Classic, which is a Professional Golfers’ Assocation Tour and FedExCup event held in White Sulphur Springs.

The Foundation, partnering with several WVU organizations, will make the badges available to the general public through outright purchases, drawings, raffles and auctions with the proceeds benefitting various University scholarship programs.

“We want to thank Greenbrier Resort owner Jim Justice and The Greenbrier Classic’s Badges for Charity program for this most generous donation,” said Wayne King, president and CEO of the WVU Foundation. “Recognizing the mission of the land-grant university we serve, the Foundation feels it is very important that we reach out and use this donation in a way that benefits the entire state. We will partner with several University organizations to maximize the impact of this wonderful gift.”

Among the organizations that will offer the passes include WVU Extension Service, which will use the proceeds to fund scholarships in all 55 counties for state and county summer 4-H camps. The Mountaineer Athletic Club, WVU Sports Management Program and WVU Alumni Association also will have passes with the proceeds supporting their respective scholarship programs. Some alumni chapters will use the proceeds for outreach efforts.

The Greenbrier Classic badge includes passes good for the duration of the tournament, including practice rounds, access to special hospitality areas with air conditioning, complementary snacks and upgraded bathrooms, tailgate style food, free parking and tickets to The Greenbrier Classic concert series headlined by two of country music’s biggest stars, Tim McGraw and Keith Urban.

The WVU Foundation is the private non-profit corporation that generates and provides support for West Virginia University.
