Clarinetist Annick Odom, winner of the 2010 Catherine and Herman Godes Young Artist Competition in the WVU Community Arts Program, will perform with the Community Arts Orchestra in its annual spring concert at the Creative Arts Center on Sunday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Antoinette Falbo Theatre.

She will perform the first movement of Mozart’s “Clarinet Concerto, KV 622.” In addition, the WVU Community Arts Orchestra, conducted by John Ashton, will perform “Russian Easter Overture, Op. 36,” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakoff; “Fugue in G minor (The Shorter),” by J.S. Bach; “Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68,” by Johannes Brahms; and “Anastasia, A Medley for Orchestra,” by Stephen Flaherty.

Odom’s many musical achievements include performing with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra, receiving the highest score for clarinet, bass clarinet and string bass at the Solo & Ensemble Festival in Fairmont; playing first chair clarinet in the 2008-2009 WV All-State Band; playing first string bass in the 2009 WV All-State Band; attending the WV Governor’s School for the Arts in the summer of 2008; receiving the WVU Community Arts Certificate of Achievement Award since 2008; and performing in the WVU Community Arts Program’s Honors Recital in 2009.

Last year, Odom performed with the International Honors Wind Symphony in New York City’s Lincoln Hall, under the direction of renowned conductors Abel Ramirez and James Keene. She is also the 2009-2010 recipient of a scholarship established in memory of Henry Marconia, and receives clarinet coaching from Richard Page, bass clarinetist in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

A senior honors student and National Merit Scholarship finalist at Morgantown High School, she is the daughter of Drs. Vernon Odom and Monique Leys of Morgantown. She has studied the clarinet since 2002 and is currently the student of Jeanne Frieben and string bass student of Andrew Kohn in the WVU Community Arts Program. Odom plans to enter college in the upcoming fall semester to study music.

The Godes Competition is held each year by the WVU Community Arts Program and is open to talented high school seniors. In addition to performing with the Orchestra, the winner receives a cash award donated by pianists Catherine and Herman Godes, sponsors of the competition. Herman Godes, who passed away in 2007, was professor emeritus in the WVU division of music. Catherine Godes is an alumna of the division of music and former director of the WVU Community Music Program.

The Community Arts Orchestra is made up of students in WVU’s Community Music Program and area musicians.
