West Virginia University’s Brown Bag Lunch Film and Discussion Series will show a film on African-American women in honor of Women’s History Month on Thursday, March 4.

“Freedom Bags,” which was released in 1992, tells the story of African-American women who migrated from the rural south during the first three decades of the 20th century, hoping to escape from the racism and poverty and to find a better life up north. Drawing from rare footage, still photographs and period music, Emmy-winning director Stanley Nelson describes the largest internal migration in U.S. history. It will be shown from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Mountainlair’s Gluck Theatre.

The film and discussion will be presented by Ann Oberhauser, director of WVU ’s Center for Women’s Studies.

The event, which is sponsored by the Office of Student Life- Multicultural Programs, is free and open to the public. Pizza will be provided first-come, first-serve.
