The Mountaineer Mascot Selection Committee is looking for the next student to make Mountaineer history by donning the buckskins, coonskin cap – and, of course, shooting the rifle.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2010-11 Mountaineer mascot. The Mountaineer cheers at West Virginia University athletic events, energizes fans and represents both the University and state.

The mascot’s chief responsibilities include attending all home and away football games, all home men’s and women’s basketball games, including any home games during WVU class breaks and away games determined by the athletics department.

The Mountaineer is also encouraged to participate in alumni and other University events, visit the WVU Children’s Hospital and West Virginia schools and get involved in community activities.

Mascot applications can be picked up at Elizabeth Moore Hall, Mountainlair and Evansdale Residential Complex front desks – or downloaded at http://www.wvu.edu/documents/2010MountaineerSelectionApplicationFinal.pdf—through Friday, Jan. 29. Applications are due Wednesday, Feb. 3 by noon at Elizabeth Moore Hall or by e-mail to James.Staten@gmail.com.

All applicants must be full-time undergraduate or graduate students with at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA.

The mascot selection process includes an application, interview and cheer-off competition. Based upon the application, which contains five essay questions, the committee will select no more than 10 candidates with the highest scores to participate in a half-hour interview.

After the interview, the top four applicants will compete in a cheer-off competition at the Feb. 27 WVU-Cincinnati men’s basketball game.

During the cheer-off, the candidates will get to wear replica buckskins and carry a rifle. The candidates will be evaluated on performance and interaction with the crowd. The new Mountaineer will be announced at the WVU-Georgetown men’s basketball game on March 1.

The selection committee is made up of a chair, co-chair and nine members – five student representatives, two athletic officials and two faculty/staff members.
