West Virginia University, which has been closed since 6 a.m. Friday due to winter storm Jonas, has delayed its scheduled reopening 24 hours – until 6 a.m. Monday (Jan. 25).

With snowfall of 20 inches and more in the area, and further accumulation expected, officials will continue to monitor conditions to ensure a safe reopening.

Some University operations are continuing, often with reduced staffing or hours. Those open include Student Recreation Center, WVU Libraries, residence halls, dining services, the Mountainlair,http://mountainlair.wvu.edu roads and grounds and other essential operations.

“I want to sincerely thank those employees who have kept our essential operations running in the face of this massive snow storm, as well as those who worked so hard ahead of time to get us prepared for this event,” said Narvel Weese, vice president for administration and finance. “To this point, we have had no disruptions, and students are being cared for. However, we continue to encourage all to keep safety in mind and to use good judgment.”

For employees needed on campus, if weather conditions prevent them from getting to work or arriving on time, they should notify their supervisor as soon as possible and prior to the start of the shift.

While normal operations, including classes, are scheduled for Monday, students, faculty and staff should stay tuned to local broadcast stations, WVU Web sites (http://students.wvu.edu, www.wvu.edu, wvutoday.wvu.edu) and social media outlets (@WVUToday and @WestVirginiaU on Twitter and www.facebook.com/wvumountaineers on Facebook), for the latest information. They should also monitor the WVU emergency text message system. (To sign up for the emergency message system, go to http://emergency.wvu.edu/signup.)

Several organizations have also announced cancellations and/or postponement, including:

  • Students needing urgent care should go to WVU Urgent Care at Suncrest Towne Centre, which is open normal hours, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • All events scheduled within the WVU Alumni Association have been postponed. Business will resume on Monday (Jan. 25), weather permitting.
  • The Evansdale Housing Fair has been rescheduled for Jan. 30.
  • The College of Creative Arts has canceled auditions scheduled for Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 23-24). New dates will be added to the schedule and announced on the College’s web site when finalized.
