Xingbo Liu, professor and associate chair of research in the Department of mechanical and aerospace engineering at West Virginia University, has been selected as one of four recipients to receive The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society 2016 Brimacombe Medalist Award.

The award is presented to mid-career professionals with sustained excellence and achievement in business, technology, education, public policy or science related to materials science and engineering. Liu was recognized for his significant contribution on research and development of high temperature materials and coatings for energy conversion, and extensive service to TMS.

The award will be presented at the organization’s annual conference, scheduled for February 14-18, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Recently named a Fellow of ASM International, Liu began his professional career at WVU as a postdoctoral researcher in 2000, and joined the faculty in mechanical and aerospace engineering in 2002. He has received several honors from the scientific community including the TMS Early Career Award in 2010, the R&D 100 Award in 2011 and the Innovator of the Year award from TechConnect WV in 2013. He was also named the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources Outstanding Researcher in 2008 and 2009, 2011 and 2015 and Researcher of the Year in 2011 and 2015.

He has served in various leadership positions outside WVU, including as chair of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society High Temperature Alloys Committee from 2011-2013 and its Energy Conversion and Storage Committee from 2012-2014. He is the standing vice-chair for the Basic Science Division of the American Ceramics Society.

Liu received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in materials science from the University of Science and Technology in Beijing, China.
