ALUMNI-IN-RESIDENCE: Scott Simons
Scott Simons, a busy writer, performer, and recording artist, will visit his alma mater as part of the Alumni-in-Residence series in the College of Creative Arts. Simons will share his music industry experiences at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, in Bloch Hall, 220A Creative Arts Center.
MASTER CLASSES: Amernet String Quartet
The Amernet String Quartet will hold three master classes during its weeklong residency at the College of Creative Arts: violin, 5 p.m., Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre; viola, 5 p.m., 213A Creative Arts Center; cello and bass, 5 p.m., 440A Creative Arts Center. All three master classes are free and open to the public.

RECITAL: NEA/NEH Celebration
West Virginia University celebrates the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities with an evening of music and insight. WVU Provost Joyce McConnell will lead off the evening, followed by a celebration video and a performance by the internationally recognized Amernet String Quartet. Amernet will present pieces by Bartok, Loeffler, and Brahms, joined by violinist Mikylah McTeer, associate professor of music at WVU. The evening, which begins at 7 p.m., is free and open to the public and will be held in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre at the Creative Arts Center. It will be followed by a reception in the Douglas O. Blaney Lobby.

PLAY: The Clean House
What are a Brazilian comedian-turned-maid, a doctor and her surgeon husband, a sister who loves to clean, and an unexpected lover all doing in the same house? They’re having a slightly surreal experience of community, comedy, and love. The School of Theatre and Dance will present the engaging modern play, “The Clean House,” by Sarah Ruhl, directed by Jim Knipple, in the Gladys G. Davis Theatre September 25 – 26, 28 – 29, October 1 – 3 at 7:30 p.m. and September 27, October 4 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster, the Creative Arts Center or Mountainlair Box Offices, or by calling 304-293-SHOW.

The Amernet String Quartet will hold a master class with the WVU String Quartet at 2 p.m. in 424A Creative Arts Center.

LECTURE: Art and Mystery in Early Medieval Europe
Roger Stalley, professor emeritus of the history of art at Trinity College Dublin, will speak on “The Book of Kells: Art and Mystery in Early Medieval Europe” at 5 p.m. in Bloch Hall, 200A Creative Arts Center. Written around 800, “The Book of Kells” (Trinity College Dublin MS 58) contains the four Gospels in Latin, canon tables and summaries of the gospel narratives and fabulous illustrations.
CONCERT: WVU Symphony Orchestra
Guest artists, a beloved symphony, and thrilling music from China will mark this year’s debut performance by the West Virginia University Symphony Orchestra on Thursday, Oct. 1. And it will all be free to WVU students. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre under the baton of Maestro Arnold. CONCERT: WVU Choral Concert
WVU’s choral groups will hold a free concert at St. France de Sales Catholic Church, 1 Guthrie Lane, Morgantown, W.Va., at 3 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.

PAUL MESAROS GALLERY: Donna Legault sculpture/sound exhibition, Tuesday through Sunday, 12 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Legault is a Canadian artist who engages audiences with sound in public spaces. Her installations activate the spectator and challenge their relation to sound by drawing attention towards the qualities of “noise” as a physical and temporal presence. See Legault’s website at http://donnalegault.com/
LAURA MESAROS GALLERY: Dylan Collins, sculpture exhibition. Tuesday through Sunday, 12 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
