If you appreciate a fine craft beer and want to enhance your knowledge or seeking career opportunities within the craft beer industry, we have a program for you. West Virginia University Continuing and Professional Education is offering a new Craft Beer Certificate Program this fall.
The program consists of three courses that are designed to get down to the nuts and bolts of the craft beer industry. Field trips to local craft breweries are included within these courses as well as the opportunity to participate in a homebrew session. Students can take these courses individually or earn the non-credit certificate by completing all three. The courses are offered Tuesdays 6-7:30 p.m. in the Academic Innovation offices on the 3rd floor of the Jackson Kelly Building, 150 Clay Street, Morgantown.
- Introduction to Craft Beer, offered Sept. 15 to Oct. 20, covers beer styles and history, brewing ingredients and the brewing processes.
- Advanced Craft Beer Appreciation, offered Nov. 3 to Dec. 15, discusses off-flavor detection and prevention, recipe formulation, beer sensory evaluations and judging.
- Craft Beer: Going Professional, offered Jan. 12 to Feb. 16, focuses on the business side of the industry. Students will learn how to create business plans, prepare financial projections and will also learn the importance of brewery design.
The courses are taught by Bryce Capodieci, president of Morgantown’s local home-brewing club and a home brewer for 17 years, and Brett Clark, a home-brewing enthusiast for 14 years.
Enrollment is limited to 20 students who must be at least 21 years of age to register.
