West Virginia University celebrated the 10th annual Week of Engagement April 16 and named this year’s recipients of the Excellence in Engagement awards.

“Every year, we become more aware of just how powerful service can be in enhancing academic learning.” said Dr. Kristi Wood-Turner, Director of the Center of Service and Learning. The recipients this year have made lasting impact in our community and expanded the reach of service. We are proud to recognize each of them with these awards.”

George Capel – Student Excellence
As WVU’s current Student Government Association President, George Capel has played key roles in engagement and service events both academically and publicly. His extensive work and involvement with service events such as the Make-A-Difference Day Clean Up in October 2014 have had a true impact on George, helping him form the platform of the M.A.D. movement, a push for students with an interest in civic engagement to take on leadership roles in SGA.

Sport and Exercise Psychology Club – Student Organization Excellence
The Sport and Exercise Psychology Club supports students in the S.E.P. major, helping ensure the service hours they perform are truly impactful. Hosting a variety of service events throughout the year, and encouraging student participation in large events such as Stop Hunger Now and Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, the club strives to educate its members that Morgantown is their home, thereby increasing dedication and involvement.

Children’s Discovery Museum of West Virginia – Partner Excellence
Through a variety of partnerships that provide valuable out-of-classroom experiences for WVU students, the Children’s Discovery Museum or WV raises awareness on many issues facing local families. Using hands-on exhibits in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields, as well as programming in nutrition and dental health for the children, the museum helps youth explore the world around them in an environment that is both educational and fun.

Nancy Young – Faculty/Staff Excellence
Nancy has over 25 years of service for WVU. She has worked for the College of Law’s library since 1990. She created the college’s first website that went live in December 1996. As a dedicated volunteer with the Mountaineer Spay and Neuter Assistance Program (M-SNAP), Nancy uses her extensive knowledge of animal issues in the area to educate students and the public about the pet overpopulation. She is the first staff member to win in the Faculty/Staff Excellence category.
