West Virginia University police chief Bob Roberts has been selected to receive the inaugural FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association’s Outstanding Service in Law Enforcement Award.

The award, presented by the Association’s local chapter, recognizes the outstanding achievements of a current or past law enforcement official who has demonstrated a distinct pattern of service to the community.

Roberts is a leader who “has been instrumental in fostering a department that embraces community policing to encourage positive behaviors. He has mentored generations of police officers and is always quick to assist,” said Randy Hudak, WVU associate vice president for facilities and services.

Roberts was nominated by Narvel Weese, WVU vice president for administration and finance, and Jay Cole, senior advisor to the president.

Roberts said he is fortunate to have an engaged community to serve, in addition to a team of dedicated police officers and staff who are committed to the campus community.

“Truly, it is a great honor to receive this award and to me, it has been a greater reward for me to serve West Virginia University and her people over the past 30 years,” Roberts said. ” I have always been a supporter of community policing and it really takes people being engaged to make our communities safer.”

Roberts will be honored during the award luncheon at the Bridgeport Conference Center on Tuesday, May 5.
