The West Virginia University Choral Program will present its first concert of the season, titled “My Spirit Sang All Day,” at the Creative Arts Center on Sunday (Nov. 2). The concert will be conducted by Kym Scott, visiting assistant professor and interim director of Choral Activities in the School of Music.
The program begins at 2 p.m. in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre and will be a multicultural musical celebration featuring WVU’s Women’s Choir and University Singers from the Choral Program, as well as a special guest performance by the WVU Graduate String Quartet and pre-concert entertainment supplied by the WVU Brass Quintet.
Kym Scott graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in 1997 after completing a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. Her training at the Queensland Conservatorium included choral conducting studies with Dr. John Nickson. She was active in the choral community, as an accompanist, conductor and teacher, and was also involved in local and national choral organizations. She was a member of the state committee of the Australian National Choral Association, serving as treasurer, and on the organizing committee of Pemulwuy, a national male voice festival.
She received a Master of Music degree in 2010 from the University of Queensland, and before moving to California in 2011, Kym taught choral music at the Brisbane Girls Grammar School and contemporary music and theory at the Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE. She also conducted two local community choirs, Southern Cross Voices and Chordiality. In August 2013 she travelled back to Australia where she conducted workshops in Canberra, and was a guest adjudicator at the Queensland Catholics Schools and Colleges Music Festival in Brisbane.
Kym is currently completing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Music at the University of Southern California, where she conducted the USC Thornton Oriana Women’s Chorus as well as several performances with both the USC Thornton Concert Choir and the USC Thornton Chamber Singers. In 2013, she conducted members of the USC choirs in several performances with The Rolling Stones in Los Angeles and Anaheim during their “50 and Counting” world tour. She finished her time at USC with a summer 2014 tour to China and South Korea.
