Tyler Hower, West Virginia University Dining Services student manager, recently won the National Association of College & University Food Services Mid-Atlantic Student of the Year Scholarship Award.

Hower, an English and communications studies major from Harrisburg, Pa., was awarded $1,000 and will now compete with six other finalists for National Student of the Year and a chance to win $5,000.

The award recognizes student employees who exemplify reliability, quality of work, initiative, team work and contribution to their employer. NACUFS Mid-Atlantic Region President Louis Logan has commended Hower on her ability to achieve academic success while working as a student manager for Dining Services and her ability to be successful in her academic and employment pursuits.

“Tyler is definitely a self-starter,” said Curt O’Shell, Tyler’s Caf Evansdale supervisor. “When she finds a program that needs improving, streamlining or reorganizing, she will actively work to make sure that task is finished, quickly and efficiently.”

The annual award is the NACUFS’s highest honor for students within the collegiate food services industry. The organization includes 510 member schools throughout the U.S. and Canada.

“We recognize how valuable our student employees are to Dining Services,” said David Friend, director for Dining Services. “Without them, we would not be able to provide our students and other guests with our high quality service.”
