The West Virginia University Figure Skating Club, as well as the Mason-Dixon Figure Skating Club, will host a picnic on Wednesday (Aug. 21) from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at White Park.

Pizza and other refreshments will be served. The free picnic is open to WVU students and families and members of the Morgantown community of any age who are interested in figure skating.

The Mason-Dixon Figure Skating Club, a Morgantown-based organization, is dedicated to offering people the chance to perform in shows and exhibitions as well as to test at various skill levels through the U.S. Figure Skating Association.

Members of the WVU Figure Skating Club serve as coaches in the Mason-Dixon Figure Skating Club and offer private lessons to skaters of all skill levels.

“For anyone who loves figure skating and wants to improve as a skater, joining the Mason-Dixon Figure Skating Club and working with WVU’s fabulous coaches is a must,” said Mark Brazaitis, a professor of English who advises the WVU Figure Skating Club.

“We have such a great time together,” said Angela Kreger, the president of the WVU Figure Skating Club. “It’s Morgantown’s own ‘skating family’ and we are always looking for new members. The picnic will hopefully encourage those interested in skating to join us.”

Kreger, who graduated from WVU with a bachelor of science in nursing degree and is now pursuing a master’s in nursing here, is a U.S. Figure Skating gold medalist in moves in the field and freeskating.

Last season, the Mason-Dixon Figure Skating Club produced two shows, a Festival on Ice in December and Cinderella on Ice in March. Under the tutelage of members of the WVU Figure Skating Club, several local skaters won medals at the 30th Mt. Lebanon Figure Skating Invitational in May.

The White Park picnic area is located at the corner of East Parkway and Hite Street (across from two softball fields) in Morgantown, a three-minute drive or 15-minute walk from WVU’s downtown campus.
