West Virginia University’s Center for Civic Engagement is collecting Dollars for Disaster to help aid in the recovery from Hurricane Sandy, which ravaged much of the northeastern U.S. last week.

Center for Civic Engagement volunteers will be collecting donations on Wednesday through Friday (Nov. 7-9) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mountainlair (between Quiznos and Tazikis), outside the main cafeteria at the Health Sciences Center and on the ground floor near the bookstore at Health Sciences Center-North.

Donations can also be mailed to the Center for Civic Engagement at PO Box 6412, Morgantown, WV 26505.

Please contribute by donating cash or checks made out to the American Red Cross.

“Collections have gone well so far, and we want to thank all our donors. The Center for Civic Engagement and American Red Cross are really hoping that faculty, staff and students can make a donation, because every bit counts, and no donation is too small,” said Alexis McMillen, program coordinator at the Center for Civic Engagement.

All donations help the American Red Cross provide post-storm relief and provide services such as food, shelter and emotional support to those affected. Donations collected will be given to the West Virginia Region of the American Red Cross and will be used for Hurricane Sandy relief in West Virginia.

Funds not needed for the relief effort in West Virginia will be designated for Hurricane Sandy relief in other states including Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. On rare occasions when donations exceed Red Cross expenses for a specific disaster, funds are used to prepare for and serve victims of other disasters.

A forum, organized by WELLWVU, for individuals whose families were impacted by Hurricane Sandy will be held on Thursday (Nov. 8) at 7 p.m. in the Shenandoah Room of the Mountainlair.

WVU Residence Halls are holding multiple Red Cross Blood Drives to aid in relief efforts. For more information, visit here.

The Mountaineer Maniacs pledged $250 to Dollars for Disaster on Monday.
