West Virginia University Police recently recognized four members of its department for exceptional service to the campus community.

Josh Cooke, senior patrol officer and his K-9 Bella received the Meritorious Service Award for continued exceptional service to the campus and community. They compose the explosive detection team and have supported campus major events and responded to assist area schools and other law enforcement agencies

Campus police officer Joseph Bragg and cadets Dennis Blanks and Kyle Freshwater were presented with the department’s Life Saving Award for their actions on March 18, when they responded to the Summit Hall Lobby in reference to a male student with severe bleeding from his arm as the result of an accident.

When Bragg arrived, the two cadets were attempting to stop the arterial bleeding from the student’s right arm. They were elevating the arm and applying direct pressure as they were trained. Bragg created a tourniquet out of his duty belt to control the severe bleeding until emergency personnel could get to the scene.
