Do you know someone who spends their free time giving back to the community? Do they deserve to be recognized for their service?

West Virginia University’s Center for Civic Engagement is now accepting nominations for the Excellence in Civic Engagement Awards. These awards will be given to one student, faculty/staff member, community partner, local business, student organization and fraternity/sorority.

Each recipient will have shown a strong commitment to civic engagement and service throughout the 2011-12 year.

“The Excellence in Civic Engagement Awards allow us to recognize the service and engaged scholarship that takes place on our campus every day,” said Dr. Kristi Wood-Turner, director of the CCE. “Many times, this kind of selfless engagement goes unnoticed, but these awards are designed to shine a bright light on these acts and encourage others to become engaged.”

The deadline to submit nominations is April 6 at 5 p.m. Those who nominate candidates will answer the following questions: How has the nominee’s civic engagement impacted the campus and community (local, statewide, nationwide or global)? Please describe how the nominee’s self-awareness, community knowledge and civic responsibility contribute to making them a leader in their respective category.

You can download the nomination form at http://cce.wvu.edu/r/download/119322 or fill out the nomination form online at http://simpleforms.scripts.wvu.edu/sf/civicengagementawards/.

The recipients are recognized as part of the Week of Engagement at the Engagement Celebration on April 19 at Lakeview Golf Resort and Spa.

The awards began in 2009 and have become a favorite part of the annual week.

“We hope that these awards can also serve as a call to action,” said Brett White, operations coordinator at the CCE. “When others see what can be accomplished through service on our campus, we hope it will motivate them to become active in our community too.”

The CCE commits to the connection of campus and community through meaningful service and academic study. To get involved in the community, check out the CCE’s website at http://cce.wvu.edu/.
