A local Walmart awarded West Virginia University’s The Rack: WVU’s Campus Food Bank with a $1,000 grant.

The grant comes from the Walmart Foundation and the Walmart Supercenter on 4-H Camp Road in Morgantown (Store # 2083) through the Local Facility Giving/Hunger Outreach Grant Program.

The funds will be used to purchase food and personal care items for students in need.

“It’s important that our students’ basic needs are met. If not, students can’t fully focus on their education and achieve their highest potential,” said Jacqueline Dooley, program coordinator for The Rack. “Thanks to support from Walmart and other donors, students can study and focus on their class work without thinking about when and where they will have their next meal.”

This is the second donation from the Walmart Foundation in support of The Rack in the last four months. In October, The Rack, WVU Children’s Hospital, WVU School of Dentistry, WVU Extension’s Energy Express and WVU Health Sciences Technology Academy received a $100,000 grant awarded from the Walmart Foundation’s West Virginia Associate Choice Award Program. Each department received $20,000.

The Rack was established in 2010 to help combat food insecurity on campus and is funded solely through grants and donations of cash and goods. To make a donation, please visit http://sadevelopment.wvu.edu or call 304-293-8944.

“With the state of our economy, the desire to start a campus food bank is high,” Dooley said. “Several colleges and universities have contacted WVU Student Organizations Services, asking for information to begin a similar program on their campus.”

The grant was made through the WVU Foundation, the private nonprofit corporation that generates, receives and administers private gifts for the benefit of WVU.
