The challenge to win West Virginia University’s Campus Cup competition starts Monday.

The Campus Cup competition, which crowns the “best hall on campus,” pits students from residence halls across campus in various friendly challenges throughout the week. The Campus Cup starts on Monday (Sept. 12) and continues through Friday (Sept. 18).

The closing ceremonies will take place on Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Evansdale Residential Complex Blue and Gold Ballroom when the winning residence hall will be announced.

“This is a lot of fun, and it’s a great opportunity to meet other students in their residence hall and their peers across campus,” said Eric O’Hara, associate director for Residential Education. “We try to get feedback from students each year to find which events are the most fun to participate in. It certainly gets competitive.”

The winning team will earn the right to be named Campus Cup champion and have its residence hall’s name displayed on a plaque in the Residential Education office.

The 2011 Campus Cup schedule is as follows (all events begin at 6 p.m. unless otherwise noted):

Monday (Sept. 12)
  • Dizzy Dash Relay, Banner competition and Fun Walk, Evansdale Campus
Tuesday (Sept. 13)
  • Soccer Shootout, Mountainlair
  • Tug o’ War, Mountainlair Plaza
Wednesday (Sept. 14) Thursday (Sept. 15)
  • Basketball Shootout, Evansdale Residential Complex basketball courts
  • Cornhole Tournament, Evansdale Residential Complex tennis courts
Sunday (Sept. 18) Monday (Sept. 26)
  • Closing Ceremonies, 7:30 p.m., Evansdale Residential Complex Blue and Gold Ballroom

In addition to these scheduled events, the Campus Cup will include two other week-long events. Each residence hall will collect nonperishable items as part of the Bartlett House Supply Drive.

Also, students can participate in the Mountaineer TRAK Kiosk Challenge to familiarize themselves with Mountaineer TRAK and the location and advantages of the job search kiosks. The challenge is designed to help students better understand the importance of utilizing the Career Services Center as early as their freshman year. Students will be required to visit the kiosk, swipe their ID cards, select job postings and email the job information to their MIX.

Residence halls are given points for each event based on their finish. Those points are totaled and first-, second- and third-place winners are named.

The competition has taken place every year since 2008 and continues to grow in numbers of participants, O’Hara said. Last year’s winner of the Campus Cup was Braxton Tower.

Residential Education has partnered with the WVU Police Department for the Dizzy Dash, WELLWVU for the Scavenger Hunt and WVU men’s soccer coach Marlon LeBlanc for the Soccer Shootout finals.

A list of rules for the competition will be provided to each hall’s Residential Hall Coordinators. Students can sign up by talking with their hall’s wellness coordinator or stopping by the main desk. Students who do not wish to participate are welcome to attend and cheer on their team.
