An advisor to Wall Street’s elite deal-makers and traders will visit West Virginia University as part of WVU’s College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences 2011 spring lecture series. Dr. Doug Hirschhorn will present “Dare to be Great” to students at 11 a.m. April 15 to in room 172 at the WVU Coliseum. The talk is also open to students, faculty, staff and the general public.

An accomplished speaker, performance principles coach and advisor, Hirschhorn’s firm, DrDoug.com, specializes in “Peak Performance Coaching.” He is a frequent contributor to CNBC and the author of “8 Ways to Great: Peak Performance on the Job and in your Life.” He uses psychological principles and “concrete, no-nonsense exercises” to help people achieve goals by identifying the “why” meaning behind those goals.

“Dr. Hirschhorn has successfully applied sport psychology performance principles into everyday life, on both the personal and professional levels,” said Dr. Ed Etzel, professor and psychologist with CPASS and WVU Intercollegiate Athletics. “His ideas have helped people make smarter business decisions and achieve personal goals.

A former Division I catcher and captain of his baseball team in college, Hirschhorn planned to eventually return to a professional sports career. He spent a few years working on the trading floors before returning to school to earn advanced degrees.

Hirschhorn began his studies for a Ph.D. in sport psychology at WVU and by applying the techniques learned in pursuing his degree, now helps investors and anyone who wants to achieve excellence to make the best and most effective use of their skills and strengths.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Colgate University in 1994, and a master’s in exercise science in 2000 from Southern Connecticut State University. In 2005, his received his Ph.D. in Psychology, with an emphasis in sport psychology from Capella University.

Hirschhorn is based in New York City, where he lives with his wife and three children. He has appeared on NBC’s Today Show, VH1’s The Fabulous Life, and currently hosts a weekly video blog for CNBC.
