Students and faculty at West Virginia University’s P.I. Reed School of Journalism continue to garner national and international recognition for their work in broadcast journalism and documentary filmmaking.
“WVU News,” the student-produced weekly news program, recently received a Platinum Ava Award, an international award that recognizes outstanding work by creative audio-visual professionals. The Platinum Award is presented to those entries judged to be among the most outstanding submissions in the competition and are recognized for their excellence in quality, creativity and resourcefulness.
Television Journalism Program Chair Gina Martino Dahlia also won a gold Ava Award for her documentary, “The Monongah Heroine,” which tells the story of the widows and children left behind following the Monongah mine disaster of 1907.
Of the nearly 1,700 entries in the 2010 Ava Awards Competition, only 12 percent received Platinum Awards and 12 percent were Gold winners.
“WVU News” was also given an Award of Merit in the international Accolade Competition. The Accolade recognizes film, television and videography professionals who demonstrate exceptional achievement in craft and creativity.
Keri Gero, a television journalism senior, served as executive producer of the award-winning Fall 2010 newscasts and credits the efforts of the entire team for the awards.
“I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to work with and be a part of the ‘WVU News’ team,” said Gero. “Winning an award for all of our hard work really makes it all worth it. It was definitely a team effort.”
In addition to the international awards, Heart Journalism Awards Program also recently recognized Erica Mokay’s talent as a radio journalist. Mokay, a television journalism junior, was named a tenth-place finalist in the radio category of the Hearst broadcast news competition.
The Hearst Journalism Awards Program, sponsored by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, was founded in 1960 to provide support, encouragement and assistance to journalism education at the college and university level. The program awards scholarships to students for outstanding performance in college-level journalism, with matching grants to the students’ schools.
