Starting this fall, West Virginia University students will be able to get their caffeine fix and career advice at the same place.

WVU’s Career Services Center opened the WVU Career Caf, where students can obtain a latte, cappuccino, espresso, coffee or tea with a side of career-talk.

“We want to create a comfortable but informative environment in our office for students, alumni and faculty,” said David Durham, director of the center. “We also want to have a small, informal venue for students to come to the office and learn about our services.”

Informal sessions will be held for targeted student and faculty groups. Examples include employer info sessions, question-and-answer sessions for rising seniors and recent alumni “chats.”

The sessions will be targeted to small groups of students and faculty, around 20 or less.

“Promoting our newly developed programs and services to students and faculty remain one of our most significant challenges,” Durham said. “By holding discussions with selected professors, faculty will come away with a better understanding of just how the center can help their students and will in turn encourage students to utilize the Career Services Center.”

In addition to the formal events, the caf will be open to students who come in for an appointment, have questions or just want to visit the center. There will be no cost for the beverages or snacks, which will be provided on occasion.

A formal schedule and specific programming will be available each semester on MIX, by visiting the center’s website at http://careerservices.wvu.edu/, by calling 304-293-2221 or by e-mailing careerservices@mail.wvu.edu.

WVU’s Career Services Center is best known for assisting students with finding jobs upon graduation, but also provides a variety of services ranging from helping new students select a major to assisting alumni that find themselves back in the job market. Traditional services are also available including instruction on resume writing and developing interview skills and techniques.

More information on services offered by the center is available at http://careerservices.wvu.edu/.
