The Student Partnership for the Advancement of Cosmic Exploration, SPACE, will be hosting the second annual Aviation Summer Camp from June 10-12 at West Virginia University’s College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.

Fifty middle school students selected from a 20-county region in West Virginia have received an an all-expense-paid, aviation-focused experience through the Mid-Atlantic Aerospace Complex in partnership with the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium.

The three-day camp will include a presentation by former astronaut Jon McBride at 10 a.m., June 10 in room 113 of the Mineral Resource Building. Other first day events include team building activities, engineering design challenges, tours of WVU wind tunnel and labs, and a Frisbee demonstration.

On day two, the campers will travel to Wheeling to participate in an onsite mission at the Challenger Learning Center. The camp will conclude by spending day three at the North Central West Virginia Airport in Bridgeport. Students will take part in the Aviation Day activities including a hands-on aviation related demonstration by pilot Lafe Kunkel and static displays.

“This is a great experience for middle school students because many of them have never been exposed to these opportunities,” said Kerri Phillips, co-president of SPACE.
