For the nearly 65 teens attending the 2nd annual 4-H Shooting Sports Weekend, the course offerings and training were right on target.

The weekend camp took place in April at the Gilmer County Recreation Center. The camp offered six class options: air pistol, archery, black powder, rifle, shotgun, and wildlife conservation.

Trained professionals from WVU Extension Service, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, and members of the WVU Rifle Team provided advice and instruction to the campers.

Organizers and campers alike say that the safety training they learn at the camp is one of the most important parts of the overall experience.

“We hope that what we teach at camp can not only change a life, but maybe help to save one, too.” Don Dransfield, WVU Extension Monroe County 4-H agent, said.
