The West Virginia University Young Democrats’ Women’s Caucus and the Center for Women’s Studies will hold Women in Politics Night on Wednesday, April 7.

West Virginia Del. Barbara Evans Fleischauer (D-Monongalia) and Del. Charlene Marshall (D-Monongalia) will speak about the struggles of being elected to public office as women and working as females in politics. They will also discuss how to combat these barriers.

Free refreshments will be provided.

Fleischauer has served in the state Legislature for 14 years. During that time, she has been a member of the Judiciary, Finance, Health and Human Resources, Rule-making Review, Veterans and Economic Development committees. For 12 years, she has served as chair of the Committee on Constitutional Revision.

She has won many awards throughout her career including being named a Friend of Nursing by the West Virginia Nurses Association; the Guardian Angel Award by the West Virginia Women’s Commission; and Legislator of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers.

Marshall has received the 1994 Mayor of the Year Award; 1985 WVEA Effie Mayhan Brown Award; 2006 Public Citizen of the Year Award by the West Virginia Bar Association; and Exceptional Service in the Public Interest Award by the FBI.

She has served as vice chair of the Committee on Political Subdivisions, house chaplain and chair of the Committee on Economic Development and Small Business.

She is a member of the committees on Constitutional Revision, Finance, Health and Human Resources, House Rules, Energy, Industry and Labor/Economic Development and Small Business and Senior Citizen Issues.

The WVU Young Democrats’ Women’s Caucus encourages the involvement of young women in the political process and the activities of the Democratic Party at the local, state and national level.

The WVU Center for Women’s Studies is dedicated to the mission of creating, evaluating and disseminating knowledge based on feminist scholarship.

Women in Politics Night will be held at 7 p.m. in room G-24 of Eisland Hall.
