West Virginia University has selected three finalists for the post of dean of the School of Medicine.
According to Christopher Colenda, M.D., M.P.H., chancellor for health sciences, the candidates are:
- Pope L. Moseley, M.D., Regents’ professor and chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, University of New Mexico School of Medicine
- Vincent D. Pellegrini, Jr., M.D., James Lawrence Kernan professor and chair, Department of Orthopaedics, University of Maryland Medical Center
- Arthur J. Ross, III, M.D., M.B.A., vice president for medical affairs and dean, Chicago Medical School, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science
“I want to thank the search committee, led by Dean Patricia Chase of the School of Pharmacy, for their diligent work in bringing these excellent candidates to the University,” Dr. Colenda said. “I’m looking forward to introducing them to our faculty, students and staff, and moving to the next stage of the selection of a dean for the School of Medicine.”
Dr. Moseley, an internal medicine specialist, is a graduate of the University of Illinois medical school, and completed postgraduate studies at the University of Iowa. He has served on the medical faculty at Iowa and the University of New Mexico. In New Mexico, he was named chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care in 1995 and senior associate dean for research in 1999. He was named department chair in 2001. Under his leadership, the department has grown from 96 to 200 faculty members and expanded its research portfolio substantially.
Dr. Pellegrini, an orthopaedic surgeon, is the president of the American Orthopaedic Association. He is a graduate of Dartmouth Medical School and completed postgraduate training at Hartford Hospital and University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital. He previously was on the faculty at Stanford University, the University of Rochester and Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, where he served ten years as chair of orthopaedics and rehabilitation. He has held his current post since 2001. His clinical interests include adult reconstructive and total joint replacement surgery.
Dr. Ross, a pediatric surgeon, is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, with postgraduate training at Duke University Medical Center, the North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He spent 10 years as a faculty member of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He was instrumental in developing the Western Clinical Campus of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, and has served as dean of the Chicago Medical School since 2004.
As a part of the selection process, faculty, staff and students will be invited to meet the candidates at open forums to be held at WVU’s Morgantown Health Sciences Campus. Moseley will visit April 12, Pellegrini April 20 and Ross April 27.
Each forum will be at 5 p.m. in the Okey Patteson Auditorium. Participants at WVU’s Charleston and Eastern Divisions can participate over a teleconference link. After the sessions, the candidates will be available for informal discussions at a reception in the Pylons Lobby.
