West Virginia University’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America’s National Bateman Team will be plunging for a purpose at the Star City Park’s Annual Polar Plunge on Saturday, Feb. 13 at noon.
Even the blizzard of 2010 can’t stop the team’s aspirations to freeze for a good cause and educate the community on the importance of the census. The Bateman Team will be hosting entertaining events and giving away free census resources to support their Every Mountaineer Counted campaign while supporting Special Olympics athletics in West Virginia.
For the people who want to donate additional funds directly to Special Olympics West Virginia without freezing, the team will have a sheet allowing everybody in attendance to paint their handprint on it. The sheet will then travel across Morgantown and be placed at different parts of the community and will be known as the “Traveling Sheet.” The Traveling Sheet will raise awareness of the residents of the community that generously donated to a good cause and the upcoming 2010 Census.
This is the sixth year that the Star City Park has hosted the Polar Plunge, a fundraising event where people run into the river in the middle of minter. All proceeds of the event are donated to Special Olympics West Virginia, which helps provide sports training and athletic competition to thousands of West Virginia children and adults with developmental disabilities.
The Every Mountaineer Counted campaign is focused on educating, motivating and encouraging the students of WVU and residents of Morgantown to participate in the decennial U.S. Census that is coming in March.
The 10-question survey is a count of everyone residing the United States. The census will affect funding decisions for WVU and the Morgantown community.
