Dr. Stephen Mitchell, Kent State University, will present “Teaching Games for Understanding: Research into Practice” on Feb. 5 from 10-11 a.m. in room 251 of the West Virginia University Coliseum.

His talk is being sponsored by WVU’s College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, as part of its distinguished lecture series.

Mitchell is a leader in sport and games, especially the role of physical education within the context of sport at the elementary and secondary level.

“Stephen Mitchell is an authority on teaching sport concepts and skills from a tactical games approach,” explains Dr. Lynn Housner, associate dean, WVU College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences. “Mitchell’s knowledge in the field spans three decades and includes measurement and evaluation in physical education, social forces in contemporary sport as well as the psychology of coaching.

“He is an expert on motivation in physical education and the effects of instructional approaches on game performance,” Housner said.

Mitchell is widely published and has presented internationally as a leader in the teaching games for understanding model, a standards-based physical education curriculum development process. His work has ranged from global perspectives on TGfU to how coaches learn to coach.

Mitchell’s honors include the Physical Education Teacher Education Honor Award, presented by the National Association for Physical Education and Sport. He is also a recipient of the English Football Association Preliminary Coaching Award.

Mitchell is the author of several books, including Sport Foundations for Elementary Physical Education: A Tactical Games Approach (2003).

The talk is free and open to students, faculty, staff and the general public. Refreshments will be served.
