Mary Ellen Mazey, dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and a West Virginia University alumna, will become dean of WVU s Eberly College of Arts and Sciences Oct. 1.

WVU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Gerald Lang announced the appointment today (May 26). The appointment follows a national search led by Eugene Cilento, dean of WVU s College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.

As dean of the Eberly College, Dr. Mazey will head WVU s largest college, with 6,300 students majoring in 30 undergraduate programs and more than 1,000 graduate students.

Im delighted that Dr. Mazey has agreed to serve as dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences,Dr. Lang said.Dr. Mazey was highly recommended by the search committee after a strong interview. She is well qualified to assume this role in a college that is critical if the University is to meet its teaching and research missions. I look forward to the leadership that I know she will provide to the college and to the campus.

In addition to serving as dean at Wright State since 1999, Mazey has been an urban affairs and geography professor there since 1979.

From 1996-97, she held an inter-governmental personnel appointment, serving as director of the Office of University Partnerships for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. She is founding director of Wright States Center for Urban and Public Affairs and held the title of Wright State University Distinguished Professor of Professional Service from 1993-1996.

A graduate of Harvard Universitys Management Development Program, Mazey earned a doctorate in urban geography from the University of Cincinnati. She also has a masters degree in geology and a bachelors degree in sociology from WVU .

Her area of scholarly and applied research includes strategic planning, regional cooperation and university community partnerships.

In 2004, Mazey was named an Eberly College Outstanding Alumnus.

It is a great honor and privilege to return to my alma mater as dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences,Mazey said.I look forward to working with the faculty, staff, students and administrators to build and enhance the educational and research mission of the college and WVU .

The Eberly College has an outstanding national and international reputation, and through collaboration, we can develop centers of excellence in teaching, research and professional service,she added.

Mazey replaces Rudy Almasy, who has been serving as interim dean since July 2004 when M. Duane Nellis left the University to become provost at Kansas State University.

Dr. Mazey is no stranger to the Eberly College since she has received one of our alumni recognition awards and served on the college advisory board,Almasy said.All of us in the office of the dean are eager to work with her. Her leadership skills are obvious.

Mazey is a native of Greenbrier County. She is married to Bruce Mazey, also a WVU alumnus. They are the parents of two children.
