Hard work in the classroom and in the community has paid off for three West Virginia high school seniors who received full scholarships to attend West Virginia University today (June 21).

Recipients of the WVU Alumni Association Loyalty Permanent Endowment Fund (LPEF) Full Scholarshipvalued at more than $45,000 over a four-year periodwill receive all educational and living expenses, plus a stipend for a unique educational experience.

The Alumni Association’s Distinguished Scholars are:

  • Randall Erik Peterson of Winfield High School,
  • Jaclyn Michele Reimann of East Fairmont High School and
  • Crystal Adair Brown of Greenbrier West High School.

The students were introduced this afternoon by Secretary of Education and the Arts Kay Goodwin and LPEF Trust Fund executive James R. McCartney in the State Cultural Center’s Grand Hall in Charleston.

“These students illustrate the true academic excellence that exists in the Mountain State,”said James R. McCartney, a member of the LPEF Trust Fund.”The WVU Alumni Association is honored to award these scholarships to such deserving young people.”

Goodwin agreed, adding,”This is a wonderful opportunity for these students. They will have the opportunity to pursue their education vigorously. There is absolutely no limit to what they can achieve.”

Randall”Erik”Peterson is the son of Randall and Delilah Peterson of Scott Depot. His accomplishments extend well beyond the classroom. He is an Eagle Scout, Senior Patrol Leader and Assistant Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America Troop 236. He has illustrated his musical talents by serving in West Virginia’s All-State Band, Putnam County’s All County Band and as the principal trombone in the West Virginia Youth Symphony.

Peterson’s academic accomplishments include participation in the National Honor Society, the Governor’s Honors Academy, Mu Alpha Theta National Math Honorary, and he was recognized as winner of the county’s Math Field Day this year and in 1998.

The scholar says a trip to Santiago, Chile, as a Boy Scout leader was among the most rewarding experiences he’s had.

“My position as Patrol Leader during the 19th World Scout Jamboree was the most important position I have ever held in scouting,”Peterson said.”It was my responsibility to keep track of eight scouters as well as myself while we traveled in the Southern Hemisphere.”Peterson plans to study biology at WVU . *

*Jaclyn”Jackie”Michele Reimann is the daughter of Karen Finemore and Gary Reimann. She is a graduate of East Fairmont High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society, student government, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honorary and the Quill and Scroll Journalism Honorary.

She served as a delegate to Rhododendron Girls’State and has served on the West Virginia Association of Student Councils. She has spent hundreds of hours of community service volunteering for the Salvation Army, the HOPE Domestic Violence Shelter, local hospice organizations and Christ Episcopal Church.

Her motto truly is”it is better to give than to receive.”

Reimann is interested in pursuing a dual degree in international studies and public relations. *

*Crystal Adair Brown is the daughter of Peggy Minear of Rainelle. She is active in the JROTC at Greenbrier West High School where she served as battalion commander and drill team captain. Brown’s accomplished academic record gained her induction into the National Honor Society and Who’s Who in American High School Students.

Her commitment to community service is illustrated by hours of volunteering at Heartland Nursing Home, the Veteran’s Hospital in Beckley and participation in many worthy causes for the needy.

She participated in WVU ’s Health Science Technology Academy and was awarded the West Virginia Army National Guard Adjunct General’s Award, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Americanism Award and the JROTC Superior Cadet Award.

Brown plans to enter WVU ’s unique Pre-Latent Fingerprint Identification degree program. **
