WVU to hold December commencement exercises

West Virginia University will celebrate its more than 2,870 December graduates in two ceremonies held at the WVU Coliseum Dec. 15.

WVU Provost Joyce McConnell will address graduates at the 9 a.m. exercises, which will include the College of Business and Economics and the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences.

McConnell is the chief academic officer responsible for the administration of all academic policies, programs, facilities and budgetary matters. A former dean of the College of Law, she has dedicated her career to improving legal education. As a teacher, scholar and higher education administrator, she has focused on two educational innovations: multidisciplinary learning and clinical legal education. At the law school, she implemented state-of-the-art experiential and clinical programs and facilities that support curricular innovation.

Wes Bush, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Northrop Grumman Corp., a leader in global security, is the speaker at the 2 p.m. commencement ceremonies, during which he’ll also be awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering. 

All other WVU colleges and schools will participate in the second ceremony. Students must register by Dec. 6 to participate in commencement exercises. 

Bush has also served as the president of the company’s Space Technology sector. He earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also completed the University of California, Los Angeles’ Executive Management Program. Bush serves on the board of directors of Norfolk Southern Corp., as well as the boards of several nonprofit organizations, including the Aerospace Industries Association, the Business-Higher Education Forum, Conservation International, the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation and the USO.

Tickets are not required and the number of guests a graduate may bring to either ceremony is not restricted.
