Jeffrey Coben, M.D., has been named dean of the West Virginia University School of Public Health.

Living well and finding joy in life are two things we all yearn for in these times of uncertainty and change. They are also the topics being explored in “Book Club for the Soul,” a unique summer course to be held on the West Virginia University campus during June and July.

A long-time West Virginia University genetics and developmental biology professor who had a profound impact on his students has been honored through the establishment of a graduate fellowship and the naming of a conference room in the new Agricultural Sciences Building.

This June, West Virginia University professor Jim Anderson will expand his own horizons and make international connections as part of the Jewish National Fund Faculty Fellowship Summer Institute in Israel. Anderson, whose areas of expertise include wetland ecology and wildlife ecology and management, is the first WVU faculty member to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Graduates from WVU Law are employed at rates higher than the national average. That is the message in employment data recently released by the American Bar Association (ABA) for the Class of 2016 from 204 law schools.

West Virginia University professor Hota GangaRao and Praveen Majjigapu, a Ph.D. student in civil engineering, have developed a system that will increase the strength and endurance of structures in earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes and other large blasts, helping communities prevent catastrophe. The system is also beneficial for repairing historic or aging structures.

Two West Virginia University students will take their research projects to a new level and one NSF fellow will bring her research to the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources thanks to prestigious graduate fellowships from the National Science Foundation. And they credit their success to the faculty who mentored and supported them.

Each year, less than a football field away from the College of Business and Economics, elementary school-aged students from the area near West Virginia University put forth their best entrepreneurial efforts on Lemonade Day. And each year, the group of participating students gets to decide where their proceeds will go.

Michael Ost, M.D., pediatric urologist, has been named associate surgeon-in-chief for WVU Medicine Children’s and professor of surgery at the West Virginia University School of Medicine effective Sept. 1.
