WVU wellness fair to offer free health screenings, chair massages
Relax with a heated chair massage, enjoy a nonalcoholic “mocktail” or learn how to manage the munchies at the Student Health Advisory Board annual Spring Fitness and Wellness Fair Thursday, April 20, at West Virginia University.
Free activities – including screenings for cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, depression and more – are from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in the Mountainlair Vandalia Lounge. The fair will also feature University experts, and participants can pick up handouts on various health topics.
The goal is to educate the public about wellness and help support faculty, staff and students in their quest for better health, said pre-pharmacy student Josh Petrunger, event coordinator.
The wellness fair, endorsed by the University's nutrition and wellness initiative, is open to the public.
A list of scheduled activities follows:
- WVU Community Medicine – alcohol awareness display, “drink safe” coasters
- Chestnut Ridge Hospital – depression screenings
- WVU Student Health Service – cholesterol and glucose screenings, “Condom Caravan”
- Human Performance Lab – risk factor screenings for chronic diseases and brochures
- WVU School of Pharmacy – Heartburn Awareness Challenge
- American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists – mocktail bar
- WVU Student Nurses – blood pressure and glucose screenings, handouts, stress dots
- Mon General Center of Complementary Medicine – chair massages
- Med Express – blood pressure screenings
- University Police – beer goggles, alcohol information
- American Red Cross – information about classes in CPR and first aid
- Rodamer & Associates – Nutrilife vitamins, XS Energy drink
- HealthSouth Mountainview Regional Rehabilitation Hospital – knee and shoulder screenings
- WVU School of Physical Education/Stansbury Fitness Center – body fat analysis, waist-to-hip ratio, resting heart rate, flexibility and strength tests
