WVU publishes book on bowling psychology

If you've ever faced a crucial shot in the final frame or missed a few easy spares in a row, then “The Handbook of Bowling Psychology” can put you in the right frame of mind.

Fitness Information Technology, a division of the International Center for Performance Excellence at West Virginia University , has released the book as part of the Sport Psychology Library series.

The book is co-authored by Dr. Eric S. Lasser, Fred Borden and Jeri Edwards – all well known individuals in the bowling world.

Designed for serious bowlers -- from dedicated youth and adult-league competitors through the professional ranks -- this book provides specific psychological strategies and exercises needed to perform at peak level.

Its 20 chapters individually address mental aspects of a highly technical and demanding sport, teaching impenetrable focus, grace under pressure and an overall sound mental game.

Lasser is a sport psychology consultant to professional tour bowlers and renowned for pioneering applications of sport psychology to bowling—including his longtime role of team psychologist for Team USA . He received his doctorate in psychology at NYU and has extensive clinical experience spanning federal, state and private levels. He is a certified sport psychology consultant (CC, AAASP), a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, and listed in the United States Olympic Committee Sport Psychology Registry, 2004-2008.

Borden is an icon in the bowling community. His overall accomplishments, coaching and otherwise, have contributed to the sport's development for 40 years. He served two tenures as Team USA head coach, enjoying repeated success at the Pan Am Games, World Championships and other major tournaments. He designed and wrote the National Governing Body's original Coaching Certification Program, produced equipment innovations, served on the NGB's Board of Directors, and is a member of five Halls of Fame, including the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Hall of Fame.

Edwards made history in 2004 as the first female head coach of Team USA , comprised of men's and women's squads. In two seasons the team has won gold at the Tenpin Team Cup, American Zone Championships and Bowling World Cup. A former Illinois State High School Champion, she went on to star at Penn State, was a Women's International Bowling Congress (WIBC) National Team Champion, and won a professional title in her only full-time year on tour.

The book is available at http://www.amazon.com and http://www.barnsandnoble.com ; and http://www.fitinfotech.com/ . The price is $29.95.
