WVU Center for Women's Studies examines sex work in Southeast Asia
The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University will present a lecture, “Currency, Coercion and Sex Work,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 26) in Eiesland Hall, Room G24.
Three-quarters of a million people are trafficked across international borders each year and forced into sexual servitude. Tuesday’s talk – sponsored by the WVU Center for Women’s Studies, Division of Social Work and West Virginia Vietnam Initiative Club – examines poor economic conditions and the lack of alternative employment possibilities that force women into sex work in Southeast Asia.
Presenters include Neal Newfield, Division of Social Work; Susan Newfield, School of Nursing; and graduate student Ashleigh Ochs, president of the Vietnam Initiative Club.
The Center for Women’s Studies offers many events for spring 2008. All are free and open to the public. The various lectures are made possible by financial contributions to the Women’s Studies Program Development Fund at WVU.
