WVU social work students help plan peace festival in Wheeling
Includes live entertainment, art exhibits, documentaries
This weekend’s “Peace + Justice in Iraq and Appalachia” festival in Wheeling will carry the handiwork of West Virginia University social work students and their counterparts at Wheeling Jesuit University.
Events will be Friday-Sunday (Oct. 26-28) at WJU’s McDonough Center.
WVU Master of Social Work students in Wheeling worked with WJU undergrads to organize the festival that includes live music, documentaries on mountaintop removal and the war, art exhibits and roundtable discussions.
Si Kahn, a folk singer and activist who heads up the national Grassroots Leadership organization, will give a talk and concert at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by a performance from Emma’s Revolution, a duo hailed by Pete Seeger for socially aware songs that “teach, but don’t preach.”
Chatman Neely, coordinator of WVU’s Wheeling-based Master of Social Work program, is already hailing the festival both for its mission and the work behind it.
”This is an excellent real-life, real-time experience for the students from both schools,” he said. “This festival is taking on timely issues of great interest to young people, and the more of them we can get involved, the more we will reach with the Peace Festival message.”
