WVU Community Arts Program offering saxophone workshop

The West Virginia University Community Arts Program is offering a workshop designed to help high school saxophonists prepare for the 2008 West Virginia All-State Band and Orchestra auditions.

The workshop will be from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in Room 440A of the Creative Arts Center on the Evansdale Campus.

Instructor Craig Lundgren will cover the following topics: interpretation tips for the assigned etudes, tips for practicing scales, sight reading, stress management and nerve control, phrasing and style.

Students will also receive a warmup and technique packet, and they will have the opportunity to work with the instructor one-on-one.

Lundgren, who is currently pursuing a doctorate in saxophone performance at WVU, graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2004 with bachelor’s degrees in both music education and performance. He received a master’s in saxophone performance from State University of New York at Fredonia this year.

Lundgren was a concerto performance winner of the University of Southern Mississippi Band Concerto Competition and three-time winner of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra’s Concerto Competition.

During 2004-05, he was an award-winning high school music director in Slidell, La., and in 2005-06, he served as graduate assistant to the Syracuse University Band Department.

The cost of the workshop is $20 per student. The registration deadline is Wednesday, Nov. 7.
