MEDIA ADVISORY:

Gov. Manchin, DEP Secretary Timmermeyer to join Garrison to kick off yearlong energy conservation awareness campaign at WVU

WHO: Gov. Joe Manchin, state Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Stephanie Timmermeyer, WVU President Mike Garrison, Student Government Association President David Kirkpatrick and representatives from Sylvania

WHAT: Kickoff of “WE CAN,” or WVU Environmental Conservation Awareness Now” – a special yearlong campus energy conservation awareness campaign. State officials plan to announce a special energy savings initiative as well. The WE CAN campaign includes a light bulb exchange called “Change a Light: Change the World.” For every incandescent bulb someone brings in, it will be exchanged for an energy efficient CFL (compact fluorescent light); limit two per person. These require less electricity and last 10 times longer than a traditional bulb. All bulbs brought in will be recycled. WVU is partnering with Sylvania, a corporate leader in environmental sustainability, on the giveaway. WVU has a contract with the company to purchase the CFLs at a discount price and begin replacing traditional bulbs in campus facilities with energy efficient ones. The “WE CAN” Ecolympics is also planned in WVU residence halls.

WHEN: Noon, Monday, Oct. 1 (NOTE: Light bulb exchange from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.)

WHERE: Mountainlair commons

WHY: “WE CAN” is designed to enhance the environment as well as save the University money. The campaign takes the University’s recycling efforts a step further by challenging building occupants – employees and students alike – to recycle, conserve energy and purchase environmentally friendly products and materials.

NOTE: Parking is available in Area 9 of the ’Lair parking garage. Please display media parking pass. Call 304-293-6997 if a pass is needed.
