State conference to showcase brownfields investment opportunities in WV

The 2007 West Virginia Brownfields Conference: “Reusing Our Legacies, Redeveloping Our Businesses, and Revitalizing Our Communities” will bring together businesses, community leaders, and real estate and environmental professionals from across West Virginia Tuesday, Sept. 25 in Bridgeport.

The conference, from 8:30 a.m.- 4:15 p.m. at the Bridgeport Conference Center adjacent to the Wingate by Wyndham Hotel, will focus on how the state is working to help local communities turn environmental liabilities into economic assets.

On-site registration and continental breakfast begin at 7:30 a.m.

Sen. Robert Plymale of Wayne County will give the opening address at 8:30 a.m.  In addition, lunch will feature a discussion by Scott Rotruck, vice president for corporate development with Chesapeake Energy. His presentation will be followed by a demonstration of the West Virginia brownfields inventory.

The conference is divided into three tracks: business, community, and technical topics. Sessions will address topics such as community visioning, how to create a community inventory of brownfield sites, site assessment, financial incentives, project funding, and risk management. The conference speakers have experience working with communities and/or investors on brownfield projects, and several will present case study examples.

The event is hosted by a partnership between WVU, Marshall University, Air and Waste Management Association, West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, West Virginia Development Office and The National Institute for Chemical Studies.

All spaces have been filled for the pre-conference tour of Clarksburg’s brownfields on Monday, Sept. 24.
