WVU goes 'Up in Smoke' to promote fire safety issues
Structure fires kill thousands of people and create millions of dollars in damage every year. Knowing what to do and how to react in the event of a fire is critical in saving lives.
In an effort to increase the knowledge of fire safety for students, West Virginia University will hold its annual “Up in Smoke” program from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept 12, on the sidewalk in front of Bennett Tower on the Evansdale Campus, and from 7-11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, in the Mountainlair Commons on the Downtown Campus.
The program provides fire prevention and safety pointers through hands-on training and experiential learning. Participants can learn how to operate fire extinguishers by dousing real flames and experience the blinding effect of a smoke-filled chamber.
Roger Wright, training specialist with WVU Environmental Health and Safety said the smoke room is one of the more dramatic demonstrations.
“We use theatrical smoke to show how confusing and disorienting it can be within a fire,” said Roger Wright, training specialist with WVU Environmental Health and Safety. “You can’t even see your hand at the end of your arm, which drives home the importance of being able to count doors and feel your way to an emergency exit.”
Additional exhibits will provide information about smoke detectors, safety tips for renters and selecting the proper fire extinguisher for various types of fires.
The event is sponsored by WVU Environmental Health and Safety, Fire Service Extension and the Morgantown Fire Department.
