West Virginia University - News and Information ServicesWest Virginia University’s Director of Dining Services, David Friend, was named the Food Service Director of the Month in the April edition of FoodService Director magazine – a national publication that serves the non-commercial food service industry.
The magazine highlighted several initiatives, spearheaded by Friend and his team, which have improved the meal plans and dining options for the University. Those changes included bringing national brand chains – such as Burger King, Freshens and the recently announced Quizno’s sub restaurant – onto campus; the introduction of the Healthy “U” program to provide a wide-range of healthy eating selections; and the development of a master development plan to improve facilities and expand services across WVU’s main and regional campuses.
“I was honored to be selected,” Friend said. “I think it clearly demonstrates that our Dining Services division is being recognized for our Healthy ‘U’ program and our aggressive master plan to renovate existing facilities to better serve an increasing student population.”
Friend is quick to point out that the recognition from the magazine should be shared with the employees of all the dining operations.
“WVU Dining Services has an excellent leadership team and numerous personnel that work diligently on a daily basis to improve the quality of programs and services to our students,” he said. “The success of our program is based on the collective efforts of all employees.”
The Healthy “U” program offers a 2,000 calorie daily menu, nutrition information through posters and hall meetings, and one-on-one dietary counseling, among other initiatives, he added.
New projects the Dining Services unit will be working on include summer renovations to the Boreman Hall Bistro, which will convert into a modern, food court concept – complete with an expanded soup/salad bar, chef’s station, made-to-order deli and a “We Proudly Brew Starbuck’s” coffee operation.
Additionally, Hatfield’s in the Mountainlair student center will undergo final renovations including installation of new floors and furnishings.
WVU’s Dining Services is also designated a “Well Workplace University” by the Wellness Council of West Virginia, meaning it promotes an organized culture that encourages and supports employee health. The unit also works closely with WVU’s Nutrition and Wellness Initiative.
