WVU sets schedule for presidential finalists' April visits to campus
(NOTE: Bernstine withdrew)

West Virginia University’s three presidential finalists -- Daniel O. Bernstine, President of Portland State University; Michael S. Garrison, managing member of the Morgantown office of Spilman Thomas & Battle PLLC; and M. Duane Nellis, Provost, Kansas State University -- will visit campus the first two weeks in April, WVU Board of Governors Chairman Steve Goodwin announced today (March 23).

While most of the open sessions are defined for particular constituency groups, anyone can attend an open session.

Goodwin noted, “WVU is a very complex organization. We want this schedule to be flexible enough that people will be able to find a time to meet the three candidates and hope that all facets of the University—employees, students, health care professionals, extension agents, researchers, alumni, donors, and others—will participate.”

“I would encourage the various constituency groups of the University to meet each of these candidates as they come to campus and see the strengths they offer us in continuing the great progress of WVU,” Goodwin said. “Input from faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members will be helpful in the selection process.”

Each finalist will also meet with members of WVU’s Board of Governors during their campus visit. Regional campus representatives will also be included in the schedule of briefings.

The Board expects to select WVU’s 22nd president at the panel’s April 13 meeting in Morgantown, and seek consent from the Higher Education Policy Commission.

David C. Hardesty, Jr., who became WVU’s 21st president in July 1995, announced his retirement from the presidency last August. It will be effective Sept. 20, 2007.
