Sago, 15 months later: Blue-ribbon panel to look at mine safety issues in disaster's aftermath
Fifteen months after the Sago Mine tragedy, the issue of coal mine safety continues to remain at the forefront of public and private discussion.
Some progress has been made toward protecting miners, but many experts agree a variety of factors have kept progress from moving as quickly and as completely as it could.
A blue-ribbon panel of the nation’s top mine safety advocates will look at where the issue has been and where it’s going in a discussion, “Thinking Outside of the Box: A Post-Sago Look at Coal Mine Safety,” from 1-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, at the West Virginia College of Law Lugar Courtroom. Hosting the forum is the West Virginia Law Review.
The panel includes:
- Edward Clair, the Associate Solicitor for Mine Safety and Health for the U.S. Department of Labor;
- Davitt McAteer, the former Assistant Secretary for Mine Safety and Health in the Clinton Administration who was appointed by West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin to investigate the Sago and Alma mine disasters; and
- Gregory Wagner, a senior advisor for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and a visiting professor at the Harvard School of Public Health.
The Lugar Courtroom will be equipped with a mult box for the benefit of broadcast media, with reserved seating for reporters covering the event. We welcome your attendance.
