WVU 'African Night' to feature food, fashion, entertainment
West Virginia University will celebrate the unique rhythms, culture and cuisine of Africa during its annual African Night from 7-10 p.m. Friday (March 16) in the Mountainlair ballrooms.
The event is sponsored by the WVU African Students Association (ASA) and features Katherine Bankole, associate professor of history at WVU and former director of the Center for Black Culture, who will speak on “Unity Among Our Young People.”
There will be a buffet with traditional African dishes prepared by ASA members and WVU Catering, a cultural fashion show and open floor dancing to African music – along with performances by the Wacongo Dance Group from Congo and WVU African Ensemble.
“The purpose of African Night is to help expose the African culture – food, clothes, traditions and the general way of life – to the Morgantown community, especially WVU,” said Paul Ozule, ASA acting president.
The festivities are open to the public. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. through Friday in the Mountainlair commons area and at the door the evening of the event.
Formed in 1992, the ASA currently has about 200 members. Its activities have included a potluck event this past fall semester to raise awareness of the Darfur region in Sudan, African meals for the Bartlett House and a movie/discussion night.
