West Virginia University - News and Information ServicesWest Virginia University will host renowned opera singer Teresa Vicario during a guest artist concert at 3:15 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 11 in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall at the Creative Arts Center.
Vicario has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe in opera, oratorio and recitals. The program is free and open to the public. It will include works by Gabriel Fauré, Hugo Wolf, Maury Yeston and Richard Strauss, among others.
Vicario is a native of Columbus, Ohio, and graduated from Ohio State University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance. She then attended the University of Texas for a master’s in voice.
The lyrico spinto soprano has also won numerous scholarships and competitions in voice, including first place in the Ohio Federation’s Young Artist Auditions. She was also a New York regional two-time winner and an international finalist in the prestigious McCallister Vocal Competition.
She has sung in Austria, Wales, Scotland England, Italy, Germany and Portugal, and with opera companies in New York, Connecticut, Ohio, Texas, New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania.
Her operatic roles include Violetta in “La Traviata,” Marguerite in “Faust,” Liu in “Turandot,” the Countess in “The Marriage of Figaro,” Donna Elvira in “Don Giovanni,” Nedda in “Pagliacci,” Micaela in “Carmen” and both Musetta and Mimi in “La Bohème.”
She debuted works in London at the Canterbury Cathedral with composer and organist Simon Gutteridge, performed radio broadcasts of Brahms’ “German Requiem” and has given numerous performances of Handel’s “Messiah,” Bach’s “Magnificat” and Mozart’s “Exultate Jubilate” with various orchestras.
In addition to her singing, Vicario is a veteran New York actress who has appeared in the NBC television show “Law & Order” and in the award-winning film “Treading Water,” for which she won Best Actress at the Brooklyn Film Festival.
