Student game-watching parties set for Thursday's WVU-Texas Tech game

West Virginia University students who can’t make the trip to New Mexico for Thursday’s (March 24) WVU-Texas Tech basketball match-up can cheer on the Mountaineers to victory at the Metropolitan Theatre and WVU’s Mountainlair student union.

The Mountaineer Maniacs, WVU’s student fan organization, has organized a watch party for students and their guests at the “Met” on High Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is free.

Maniacs Executive Director Rusty Secrist said there are plenty of good seats, and the game will be broadcast on a huge screen.

“The Metropolitan Theatre is equipped with a picture-perfect, movie theater-sized screen, which makes it seem as if you are actually there,” he said. “Don’t miss this chance to experience WVU history with hundreds of other fans.”

Students, faculty and staff may also cheer on the team from the Side Pocket Pub Thursday night in the ’Lair. The eatery has a big-screen TV and will be offering a variety of food specials, said Sonja Wilson with the Mountainlair administration.

The games area will also be fully operational with video games, billiards and bowling, she added. People should enter the ground floor from the front of the ’Lair or the loading dock entrance.

“Our team has been making us proud. Let’s make them proud and back them up as great fans,” Wilson said.

“Mountaineer fans know how to have a good time, and they know how to celebrate with dignity and pride,” Secrist added. “Win or lose, let’s join together and show we have the best fans in the country.”
