West Virginia University - News and Information ServicesThe Traverser Saxophone Quartet will perform in concert at the West Virginia University Creative Arts Center, Friday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Falbo Theatre. The event is free and open to the public.
Members of the group include: Curtis Johnson of the WVU music faculty; David Wright, assistant professor of music at West Virginia Wesleyan College; Jonathan Brink, a graduate student in saxophone performance at WVU; and Michael Sakash, assistant professor of instrumental music at Washington & Jefferson College.
Seeking out new music is one of the Quartet ' s main objectives. The name Traverser means “ crossing over ” and describes the varied music the group performs-everything from core classical repertoire to jazz and funk styles. Also, the members switch instruments throughout the performances, creating a continuously varied ensemble texture.
The Traverser Saxophone Quartet has already given concerts across the states of West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Minnesota, at events such as the World Saxophone Congress XIII. They hosted the first annual Traverser Saxophone Symposium at West Virginia Wesleyan College in February 2003 and founded the Appalachian Saxophone Orchestra.
With a CD to be released in the spring of 2004, the Quartet is preparing for a concert tour to Germany, Italy and Greece.
