Printing Press dedication planned at WVU Tech
West Virginia University Institute of Technology will dedicate its new $400,000 printing press in ceremonies planned for 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in the Engineering Laboratory Building. A reception will follow at the David S. Long Alumni Center at 612 Third Avenue.
The Department of Printing recently received its second donated newspaper press from Goss Graphic Systems.
"This press, along with our first four-unit community web press from Goss in 1989, allows the department to provide some of the best hands-on training in the world for our students," Department of Printing Chair Jack Nuckols said.
The Printing Department is served by the Newspaper Operations Advisory Committee. This committee is comprised of chief executive officers and vice presidents from major newspaper groups in the country including USA Today, Knight Ridder, Scripps Howard, The Tribune Company, Cox and Gannett. Over the past 14 years, this committee has been instrumental in obtaining more than $1.6 million in equipment, supply and press accessory donations for the department.
"This press will enable us to provide workforce development training in line with what’s being expected from the recent state legislation," Nuckols said. "We expect many newspaper executives, state and local officials to attend, and will use the dedication to thank them for their continued support."
The mission of the Printing Technology Program is consistent with the mission of West Virginia University Tech as an Institute of Technology and the community college mission of the Community and Technical College. The associate degree program provides career/technical education designed to prepare graduates for immediate employment with industry. The program is also designed to prepare graduates for immediate transfer to the institution’s plus-two bachelor degree program, thus providing opportunities for graduates to continue their education and expand their career options into such areas as management, sales and service.
